Riddle me this, personal brand master: what does your personal webpage's domain extension say about you?
.com is of course premium, but what about .net, .org, .info, .tv, etc?
If yourname.com is taken, would you recommend settling for yournameslightlyaltered.com, or go with yourname.net, yourname.org, yourname.info or something else?
As far as the extension goes, I think the most important thing is to stick with one website name for consistency. "KarlHughes.com" was taken, but "KarlLHughes.com" was not, so I took that one. Now when you Google Karl L Hughes, my website comes up as the top result. I make sure that I use Karl L. Hughes for everything, including my resume, facebook, twitter, linked in, etc. That way, I am connected to one name, and it's consistent across the internet.
Domain names are pretty cheap, and since you can buy a bunch and forward them all to one website, I would recommend buying a couple. I like the ".com" extension, but it may be tough to get for a lot of people's names. I don't think there's anything wrong with .net, .org, etc, but I think the key is consistency - using the same name across the internet to make sure you get tied to the search results you want.
